This huge monolith is a coaling tower. It was used to store coal for steam locomotives back in the days of steam. This particular tower is appoximatly 12 stories tall and held about 700 tons of coal. Location Frankfort Indiana 1992. Camera Minolta XG1n 50mm lens Kodak VRG100.

Monolith is an odd name for the structure!?
Am familiar though with this type of tower, having grown up in a steel mill and coal mining area of Pennsylvania.
With an additon of a upgrade conveyor belt, it also closely resembles the towers where the trains coal(hopper) cars were loaded.
