Well ...this is going to cost me!...,,a friend, or he used to be...., is bringing round a German camera tomorrow, a Ucaflex, with standard Zeiss lens, this reflex semi SLR camera is very rare to say the least,.... it was the German Periflex, and Sir Kenneth Corfield always denied he got any ideas from the Uca camera.
It uses a Periscope view, like the Periflex, but moves the entire miniature pentaprism out of the way to allow the shot. The viewfinder becomes a direct view as the shutter is released. Some were 24x24 format, some full frame on late models, of which the one coming here is.
Ken Corfield never bothered to add a Pentaprism to the Periflex, allowing only a reversed mirror image for focusing, unlike the Ucaflex, which has a true image of the centre of the shot. The Ucacamera has screw on lenses and is the thickness and size of a Leica. It took Exakta lenses via an adaptor as an extra feature.
Agfa took over the company and the complex camera was only produced in limited numbers.
Trading in this league of rarity is going to be expensive or an exchange of say... a Reid!! if cash is involved ...phew!

Oh dear...... I have looked up what these sell for, so expensive that Christies Auction house is involved rather than Ebay!! No ebay sales seem to have been recorded for the Ucaflex.....well at least I'll get a look at one!!!

Resistance is futile, you know you want it.

It's arm and a leg time, the cost is going to be simply too high, a very nice camera though, with a Zeiss Biotar 58mm F2 lens, which I am running a film past this weekend, with very great care!
Interesting design, quite unique in operation, but a direct cousin to the Ken Corfield British Periflex, both sharing the aim of improving on a basic rangefinder, with through the lens focusing, but not full frame viewing. The view changes to a direct viewfinder window when the shutter is used, the miniature pentaprism flips up out of the way, rather than the periscope going up as in the Corfield. The Corfield has a direct separate viewer, the Ucaflex has just the one.
The quality looks good, they claimed rivalry with Leica, but restrictions in post war conditions meant patchy production, and then the new owners, Agfa, stopped the development of new models.

As I thought, the cost is too high, but at least a film run through it, and tried out. Quite practical, but slow to use despite the straight through viewfinder. Very accurate focusing of course, the semi reflex view is 8x magnification, rather like an SLR with a magnifier attached to the pentaprism viewfinder. I'll post some shots next week. Stephen.

At least you got to try it, and a 'review' will let us share your experience.
