John Parry said there was a discussion some time ago about how bad mirror lenses were. I had to agree until I got the 600 Sigma. I b ought it to use while my 500 f4.5 L was being adjusted and if you are careful with the background the detail is astounding. See if you agree

I agree. I have the Sigma 600 mm but never got such astounding results. I must try again with a heavier tripod. Coming from Tim Horton's country those background donuts never bothered me.

I must try again with a heavier tripod. That is the problem with a lot of mirror shots. Since they are so small and light people tend to try and handhold or use a light tripod. It is still a 600 mm lens

That's a great picture of the moon. I've only ever tried a cheap mirror lens and the results were hopeless. I expect you get what you pay for. I was offered, once, a Canon mirror lens but couldn't justify the expense.

I've been joking on another thread about a new autofocussing extender I've just bought for my Yashica AFs. The extender will (supposedly) autofocus manual lenses (which is why I want it). But apparently, this extender is capable of pulling in lens and extender combinations that cannot focus to infinity. The extender is 1.6x, and if I put a 2x extender on my 400mm Soligor - that gives 1280mm. The trouble with this extender is that it needs a lot of light, but... The moon is far brighter than any normal scene. It's a million to one shot but it just might work!!!

sure would. I use the moony rulle of f11@1/ISO and it works well. Rachel, the Canon mirror will blow the Sigma away but I have a 500 f4.5 and wanted a 600. However you should see shots with the 500 and a Vivita 1.5 extender. I also use a very old double leg Manfrotto tripod that weighs 18 pounds

You are subconsiously trying to tempt me to spend more money...when I already owe the wonderfull, kind peope of the USA IRS money this year. Do you think they will wait when I state purchasing a lens is more important to me???

I'm certainly glad I have never been impressed with my own 500mm mirror lens. Otherwise, I'd be in the same boat as the "other Ron" (kamera). I also owe the Internal Revenue Service a hefty additional sum this year...and doubt they would wait if I decided to spend the money on cameras and lenses!
