The day after i bought the Rollei Magic, it's Japanese counterpart in the form of a Yashica E arrived in the mail. The Yashica was made as an answer to Rollei's Magic, though it's a fine camera it is nowhere near as sophisticated as the Rollei. It is shutter priority auto,BUT... there's only one shutterspeed 1/60th based on that the aperture is set. Now this 1/60th is very limiting in capturing moving subjects so the "E" wasn't much of an "action" cam. It is unfair to compare the Yashica to the Rollei, the Yashica being the "budget auto TLR" Anyway both the "E" and the "Magic" will become "shelve queens" as i am not intending on using either of them. They are interesting relics of a bygone era in wich camera makers were struggeling in finding ways to make photography more accesible or worry free by making cameras "automatic" with the technology wich was on hand at the time. However sales figures showed the market wasn't ready for these type of cameras ( "E" 9442 units, "MagicII"12.600 units) The "E" being produced for only one year (June'63 to July '64) Looking back, this only comes to show how far cameras have evolved in half a century thanks to micro electronics.
