I believe that the FE (and other bodies in the series) is affordable because people are afraid of its electronics. Good for us.

I believe that the FE (and other bodies in the series) is affordable because people are afraid of its electronics. Good for us. The trouble with the FM/FE series is that even the FM has an achilles heel as the led's in the viewfinder tend to break down (especially in the early series) still the camera will be fully usable but no lightmeter. If the FE's electronics give up you're left with only one shutterspeed 1/90th in the FE (wich is still usable in most situations) 1/200th in the FE2 and 1/250th in the FE2N wich isn't all that practical.I've found this only one mechanical shutter speed in case of electronic troubles allways a problem with the F3 Nikon claims the electronics on that one will never break down, but i do prefer the canon F1 or pentax LX solution in that range of cameras.

Not that i am planning to keep on collecting FM/FE's but at an estate sale this set was trown in alongside some other photographic equipement i was able to buy by having the highest bid. It's a very nice late 70ties set : FE with motor drive and the following nikkor lenses: 20/4 - 24/2.8 - 50/2 - 135/2.8 - 35-70/3.5 - 80-200/4.5. All these lenses are in like new condition. Both the zooms have very light zoom function and would need service should i want them to be perfect . I'm gonna try the 35-70 out and compare it to some other period zooms to see how it performs. The 35-70 is a lens wich doesn't seem to be all that special today but back then it was quite expensive and highly regarded because of the constant 3.5 aperture over the complete focal range and its special (lens) coating.

I avoid everything auto and electronic since even Leica does not provide spares after a while. Lens motors-, cameraoperated focus and aperture is even less reliable.
For Nikons screwdriver focus, my Angenieux zoom is fortunately equipped with mechanical focus rings that work.
Cameramarkets here in Norway are not particularly well supplied, so bargains like the above are very rare. At the moment I am trying to find a 65mm zeiss planachro/160/0,017 for my microscope, but that is even more difficult
