When doing some tests for sharpness and bokeh a strange thing happened. The two shots below are both made with the camera mounted on a tripod, at exactly the same distance. The samyang came out nowhere near its claimed 35mm, so I checked it against some other lenses and the actual angle of view is approxomatly that of a 45mm! So far I dont know what causes this and if the lens would be focussed at infinity it would give the 35mm angle of view (because of "focus breathing"), if so it would have been something I would rather expected this from a zoom than a fixed focal lenght. Still need to check that.

You could test at infinity focus, but probably it won’t change much.

You could test at infinity focus, but probably it won’t change much. Did the test, turned out it's what Ive thought, the samyang suffers from some serious focus breathing at close focussing distances. Here's two shots one with the nikkor 35 f2 and the other with the samyang 35 f1:1.4 both focussed close to infinity. Both give the same field of view. So the focus breathing of the Samyang is something to be taken in to account when getting closer to the subject. nikkor: samyang:

Indeed! Did not expect this effect.

When comparing the samyang to the nikkor I was amased at how much better the samyang was, to a point I thought I did something wrong with the nikkor, but I didn't. Now I'll have to check some other 35mm's as well just out of curiosity. But first I'm gonna leave for a few days to Iceland to see how the panasonic travel compacts behave at -8°C. Here's some 100% cut outs : Nikkor 35mm AF f2 Samyang 35mm f1:1.4 Both shot were focussed on the lantern

Very impressive. I would have expected more from the Nikkor.

I did make a mistake with the nikkor, I've tried it again and got good results, while I was at it I tested some of the other 35mm's: 1) Voigtländer nokton35 1:1.4 2Leitz Elmarit R 35 1:2.8 3)Canon FD 35 1:2 4)Carl Zeiss Distagon 35 1:2.8 5) Nikkor 35 1:2 6)Nikkor AF 35 1:2 D Nikkor 35 1:2.8 not in the picture The best in this test was the Nikkor Ai 35 f2 (manual) with the Zeiss as a close second. The Leica R 35 was dissapointing and the Voigtländer a disaster.

It may be a good idea to have it inspected by a professional or to contact the manufacturer for assistance.
