Bob was trolling through some of my saved photos today and found this photo and asked me why I never uploaded it here. I took it a couple of years ago on a grueling 19 mile 12 hour hiking trip with my daughter (somewhere bob has pictures of us coming out of the woods at the end of the day....it wasn't a pretty sight, lol) The reason I never posted it was 1--because it was taken before I joined the group and 2--because I took it with a crappy little minolta freedom point and shoot that Bob had given me to replace another p&s that I killed on a long hiking trip the year before. So because Bob insisted here it is... Although you can't get a real idea of the size of the boulder, it is the size of a 2 story house, perched 1500 ft above the floor of Pinkham Notch on a long ridge leading to Boot Spur and the summit of Mt Washington You can see it for quite aways as you drive along rt 16. Just standing next to it was a little intimidating...especially since it seems to be balanced on such a small bit of bottom. Sherri

Sherri - Bob was right! You should never be timid about posting nice shots!

Sherri, I'm so glad you posted this. It's a beautiful shot. If you were in the UK I might think it was part of a henge. What a tremendous sense of distance you've captured here, and the clouds are a bonus. The little Minolta Freedom did a fine job for you.

Sherri,
A truly impressive shot. And it proves that it is not the camera but the photographer.

Where does it say 'No Point & Shoots Allowed!' And if things were limited to shots taken since people were members, we wouldn't have seen the superb aircraft shots that have been a recent feature on here.
No - you blast away girl, go through your records and post whatever seems good to you!
Black basalt, and it sounds stupid, but it's probably a crystal!

Hmmm, don't know much of anything about rocks...always assumed it was granite. I only know it's a glacial erratic left during the last ice age...and that it didn't come from too far away because it is a rock common to the area. I also know there's quite a bit of quartz and other crystals wrapped into a lot of those rocks and it's really pretty when the sun hits it just right. In the early settlement days that mountain range was called the Crystal Hills And as far as posting the older stuff. I've already scrapped it or it's buried in piles waiting to be scrapbooked. I'd forgotton that shot til bob found it, lol
