....So the Mamiya f/1.4 lens is sweet. The Mamiya has a wonderful thunk when triggered. Yeah, I confess...It thunks better than my Fujica ST801. ;D ;D Yeah, by the Smilies you can tell I'm happy with the Mamiya DSX...even if Fujica did it first. ha ha ha ha.... Welcome to my dark side, litesong!

Just about the time I convince myself to slow down on my collection, someone mentions another camera or brand which I do not have and...off to Ebay I go to see what I can find.
I guess I will never shirk this addiction.

Hi Rachel...Of course, Herron has the expertise on Mamiyas & I'm just a rank Mamiya beginner. But I love to meter open aperture, so recommend the DSX & MSX Mamiyas, the D standing for Dual Metering(average & spot) & M standing for...Mono Metering? (spot...no average). Herron probably knows about longevities, strengths & weaknesses of individual Mamiyas. But Rachel, you really need a Fujica first. Litesong

I see I should try and get a Mamiya M42 body Rachel: The MSX/DSX series was a good, sturdy tank of a camera, and IMHO everybody should have a 35mm Mamiya of some kind! Of course, I've been camera collecting for 38 years and still don't have a Fujica...which I am sure is something Litesong will think I should promptly remedy! ;D LOL

The D in DSX certainly pertains to dual metering, but I never actually thought about what the M in MSX stood for! You're probably right (about the letters anyway)!

Speaking of MSX, just returned from the pawnshop with not one but two good old SLR beauties: a mint (not an eBay mint either) Spotmatic SPll with 55mm f1.8 and a whole kit complete with Mamiya MSX1000, 55 f1.8 Sekor SX, 49mm UV filter, 49 mm polariser, 2 55 mm front caps, three screw mount M42 rear caps, a Tiffen Series 6 filter adapter, Kodak Series 6 adapter and hood, 2 Kodak Series 6 filters (yellow and UV), set of three macro focus rings, Hanimex T mount 135 f3.5, Hanimar 35 f3.5, Makinon 80-200 f4.5 and a Canon carry bag all for the princely sum of $100 Can. tax included or approx. $87 before tax. Yippee. Only bad part is I just bought my gym membership for $525 an hour earlier so guess who's not buying much on Ebay for a few weeks. On the positive side I'm corresponding with a retired US Naval fellow who's selling 11 Pentax LX, 13 ME's and 180 K mount lenses with plenty of Series 1 Vivitars in the mix. Now if only that lottery ticket would pay off.... 11 LX, hmmmmmm

Hi Mamiya lovers...Litesong, the Fujica lover here again. Got the 1st 4"x6" pix back from the Mamiya DSX, many taken with the Mamiya SX 200mm f/3.5 lens. When I first began lite metering with the DSX camera, I felt that the meter(used average, not spot) might be reading to create slightly over-bright pix. I therefore, opted to take pix with the meter showing 1/2 stop underexposure. The ASA 200 film I used tended to give dark prints, so I was gambling that I might get really dark prints. But initial results showed my judgment to be correct & colors were uniformly bright but well saturated showing the crisp bright reality of the days of photography. I am finely pleased with the Mamiya DSX. Careful examination of the tiny pix show sharpness to the edge. I'm also pleased with the 200mm f/3.5 SX lens, & expect sharp 8.5"X11" prints using the sharpest films. I see image quality on par with Fujica. Two Mamiya items tho, not on par with Fujica are the dimmer viewfinder & lack of a split-image focuser. Dim light(& we get plenty of dim lite in cloudy Washington State) with the f/3.5 200mm lens made focusing & metering longer, less sure & definitely less pleasant than with Fujica. I will use the Mamiya SX 200mm lens on Fujica ST801 & see if the lens is easier to focus. Also, I used the Mamiya SX f/3.5 lens on both the Mamiya AND FUJICA ST901 & HAD THE SAME METER READINGS in low level lite. Again, as I have previously mentioned in other emails, this indicates that Mamiya swiped Fujica technology in open aperture M42 metering. The extent of the identical Fujica & Mamiya meterings is the extent of Mamiya's identical copying. I will test both Fujica ST & Mamiya DSX cameras with SX lenses in many light levels. If meter readings continue to coincide, I will have gladly gained an open aperture 200mm f/3.5 lens for Fujica, since Fujica ever & only made a 200mm f/4.5 lens. The 65% light grasp increase is well worth having... thank you very much! ;D I do await the day the Mamiya spot meter will make a decisive exposure change for a difficultly metered pic. Grace & peace to all readers...litesong ;D

Hi...Following up my initial lite measurements in dim light indicating similar lite measurements when using the Mamiya SX 200mm f/3.5 lens on both the Mamiya DSX camera & Fujica ST801 or ST901 cameras in open aperture mode--in brighter lighting, the lite measurements appear to diverge giving different readings in open aperture mode. But two lite measurements for the Mamiya & Fujica do coincide in the stopped down mode which is to be expected. Further tests shall be continued. But it doesn't appear as if I can use Mamiya SX lenses straight across for Fujica ST lenses, despite lite measurements coinciding over part of the light range. Too bad. It would have been neat to use Mamiya SX & Fujica ST lenses interchangeably on Mamiya DSX, MSX & Fujica ST cameras open aperture. Yes, it would be the height of coincidence. Grace & peace to all readers....litesong
