I just received a Vivitar 28mm F2.5 for my Minolta's. It's a beautiful lens. I just have 1 question. Why is the front so large? It looks as it the actual front element is small, I think it could have be made for a 55mm filter & lens cap. But then again, that large front does look cool.

I have the same lens for both Minolta mount and M42 mount. Both lenses work great.

It's simply a matter of having a wide enough flange to clear the wider angle of view that the lens covers. It's especially important when you add a lens hood! Otherwise the front flange and whatever you put on it would impinge on the image area.
Really nice lens, by the way. I've used it in Nikon and Praktica/Pentax mount. Sweet!

I concur, I also have this lens in Pentax M42 mount and it's quite good, especially for the remarkably low prices I've seen on ebay.
