Recently I sold a camera on ebay. This morning I had two seperate messages in my email from "John" claiming I had "picked up the money" but he had not received the package. He didn't say what camera but accused me of scamming him and demanded I reply immediately. Well, I checked with UPS tracking and it said the camera I sent had been delivered a week ago. Then I clicked on the "Respond" link in the email and it popped up a standard looking box for me to log into the auction site and tell the person the item had been delivered. Fortunately, a few weeks ago I installed the browser enhancement form the auction on my internet explorer. As soon as I clicked on the respond button a red flag came up in the browser telling me I was being sent to a spoofed site. So, apparently people who buy and sell on the aution are being tracked in an attempt to get you to log in, with your password going directly to the spoofer not the auction. They are betting you will respond quickly because you are being accused of scamming them.
I would encourage anyone using the auction on a regular basis to install the explorer anhancement offered.

Yes,
Have had a number of emails on the same lines. Broadly speaking, if it isn't in your eBay Messages heading, don't reply to it. I got a private email telling me that 'unusual activity' had been detected on foreign versions of eBay, and there were 'irregularities' concerning my bidding activities there. I should click on a link, where I would be asked to log in for 'account verification' purposes. I checked out the link (NOT a good move!!) and it looked exactly like an eBay log-in page.
Fortunately, I backed off at that point and reported it - spoof.
Regards
ps - sorry I scammed you Wayne - "John"

I've gotten those same e-mails. I usually report the offenders to spoof@ebay.com. I can't understand for the life of me why somebody would be so desparate for money that they would try to pull off something like this. To me this is a form of interneterrorism.

Wayne: Pardon me...my head is getting thicker as I get older. What is the browser enchancement you mention? Ron. If you go on Ebay's main menu (don't remember exactly where) There is a program you can download and install. It is incorporated into you browser. It will identify at least some "spoof messages" associated with ebay addresses. It will also alert you if the bidding on an item you are watching is nearing and end. It also, supposedly helps guard your account in other ways. Wayne

Hi Randy...Whereever there is money to be made, there will be people trying to make it...either legally or illegally. But don't connect the word terrorism to it. Leave that word for things like Maoist Chinese, Stalinist, Hitlerian, Serbian, Croatian, Pol Potian, Tutsi & Hutu genocidal acts...or Israeli acts against Palestinians, Palestinian acts against Israelis, 747s hitting skyscrapers, U.S. atrocities against Native Americans, universal abuse & neglect of Africa, child & woman abductions, rapes, & killings, etc. To connect the hot button word "terrorism" to lesser acts, is to severely downgrade true atrocities that are black slashes against the cosmos, & lessen the memory of lost, suffering, & physically dead souls at the hands of those who took, take up, or will take up the sword...whether the sword is made of steel, fleshly hands or words. Remember the suffering. Grace & peace to you, Randy & all readers....litesong I don't see what this has to do with photography. Politics don't belong on a photography forum. I'm sure there are forums where your observations would be welcome and appropriate.

This, of course, is only one of the many ways to get screwed on Ebay. As a seller (I used to sell studio products on Ebay) I got burned a couple of times by people using chargebacks on PayPal but not returning the items. The first time it happened, I never received any communications from the person. I just noticed almost $300 gone from my PayPal account one morning. He never returned the item (although my policy was 100% refund) and I never got my money back from PayPal, so he got some free items. About a year later, I got a complaint from a buyer and offered 100% refund. I guess she decided it was easier to chargeback then to return the items. That was about a $250 loss, and she got some free stuff also. Needless to say, I quit using PayPal after that. It's a real shocker to check a bank account and have it minus a handful of cash, not to mention the feeling of helplessness when there's nothing you can do about it. I raised holy hell with PayPal but never got the money back. The really sad thing is that PayPal takes the money first and doesn't bother to ask questions later. Most people have virtually no problems with PayPal, but when you have a dozen+ items going out per day you're bound to run into some bad apples that know how to take advantage of something designed to protect people to get something free.
Lite, I couldn't agree with you more. As a young soldier I saw much of the suffering in the desert of Southwest Asia, and it was uglier than words could describe. Peace to you my friend.
