Bought two from the same seller. The first is an RTL1000. Hadn't read the description carefully enough, as it stated that the aperture was opening with each wind-on. I'm a little annoyed, 'cause the lens (a very nice 50/1.8 Pentacon) is very, very sluggish too.
Still, at least I've got a spare prism finder.
In contrast, the other camera is a VX500 in beautiful condition. Not as smooth as my Varex 1A, but the shutters are pristine. It has a nice waist-level finder (the Varex is a prism), so I'll be able to mix and match. Doesn't have a lens (would have been nice to put the RTL's Pentacon on it), but I have a nice little selection of Exacta lenses anyway.
On the whole I'm not too unhappy. Must read the small print!
Regards - John

Regards - John John, I'm not certain that I follow exactly what you mean. Aperture opens with each wind-on? Would that be the lens aperture? The 50mm Oreston lens is not difficult to work on and a good cleaning should return the iris blades to normal operation. Also, if the RTL-1000 includes the small left-side shutter release extension, the normal auto Exakta lenses can be used. A properly working RTL-1000 is a nice enough camera. If the shutter is bulking, flush the shutter mechanism with naptha or alcohol and THOROUGHLY dry it. The smallest amount of oil or wetness will cause it to stick. However, once completely clean, it's a very accurate shutter. The VX-500 sounds like a very nice one and they're not too common in that condition. Good going. Walker

Hi Walker,
The shutters are open all the time. As you operate the wind-on lever, the shutters close, but open as you come to the end of the stroke. No sign of movement from the mirror, which is permanently 'up', and as I've been operating the wind-on lever it sounds more and more 'graunchy'. I've bought a pup!

Regards - John John, the first set of blades are not latching and fall back open at the end of the wind cycle while the second set of blades are staying up. Do the upper set close if you press the release? A good flush of the shutter blades may solve the problem. I had one like that once and managed to fix it with a flush but you won't know until you try it. The blades must be completely dry after flushing or they will continue to stick. It's worth a try and you won't hurt anything unless you use something that melts plastic. Let us know what you do. The RTL-1000 is worth saving. Walker
