I now have a Nikkor pre-ai 24 f2.8 lens on the way from the US. I did pretty good with the price considering local prices for this focal length are a little nutty.

I am sure that you will enjoy that lens. I somehow wound up with two and they have been very good.

Enjoy that new lens Bill. I have the 24/2.8 AI and use it often. Beautiful lens.

Here's another vote for the 2,8 24mm ai. I have that lens and the 20mm 2.8 af Nikkor and for most things I perfer the 24mm. The 24mm is the reason I never have got excited about 28mm Nikkor. IMHO the 24mm is a better focal length.

Funny you should say the 24 is your most preferred wide. I would agree that if you want only one wide Nikkor that the 24 will serve you best. OTH if you prefer less wide angle distortion the 28mm ais, not ai, deserves mention and I think it may be even sharper and focus closer. I am torn between which to use as you can see.

IMHO distortion is only a problem with the 24mm if you go out of your way to cause it --- moving up very close to the subject or not holding the camera level. When you get wider than 24mm you will always have some distortion. I'm a fan of the 35mm lens, too, and 24mm, to me, is a lot more logical step above 35mm. 28mm and 35mm are too close together.

Again I agree with you, a 24 and a 35 make a nice pair. I think you have to pair a 28 with a 50.

The lens landed this week and I plan to use this Sunday on a photo shoot in the morning up near the Forks of the Credit, northwest of Toronto. It's in great shape but squeaks when I focus quickly, but that is it.
