Just picked up a 35-70mm f3.3-4.5 Nikkor autofocus lens. It was an entry level zoom a few years back but it does have a metal mount. And I really couldn't justify paying several hundred dollars for the F2.8 Nikkor zoom of the same focal length.
There are a couple of reasons I got the lens. One is that most of my Nikon lenses are manual focus and I wanted a lens to take advantage of the AF on my Nikon F4. Also, I have an SB-25 Nikon Flash that works pretty much automatically on the F4 IF you are using an autofocus lens.
There's another reason I opted for an AF lens, however. Sooner or later I know I will get a digital SLR. The "chipped" AF lenses are almost a must on those camera unless you get a high end model. So, since I have manual focus lenses pretty will covered it's time to start preparing for the inevitable.
It's interesting how the digital crowd is affecting used lens prices--at least Nikon. The MF models are dropping rapidly in price but not so with AF lenses. A couple of years ago I picked up a used 50mm f1.8 AF Nikkor for $50 including shipping. Now the 50mm 1.8 AF in good shape seldom goes for less than $75. (wish I hadn't sold mine). Two years ago you couldn't hardly give away the 35-70 entry level zoom. Now they are fetching $50-$75 depending on condition.

As part of the aforementioned digital crowd that's been scooping up older AF lenses (I only defected to Nikon after going digital), I can happily report that lens works quite nicely on a D70s. Oddly enough, I've been hearing from some sources that the D200 (which can meter with "dumb" MF lenses) has been driving the prices on Nikon MF lenses back up a tad. I've had pretty good luck shooting MF lenses on my lower end Nikon, but you've either got to have a good eye for exposure, or be willing to use the LCD to make adjustments.
Still trying to find a nice Nikkor-O 35/2 for a decent price, as I've fallen in love with the OOF rendering of that lens.
The 50/1.8 AF also gets a lot of positive press on the internet, and that lens in particular is recommended all over the place. That's probably helped to keep the price up.
