Last night I won auction number 110096329838 that offered two SLR's with lenses for parts/repair. They are a Yashica TL Electro-X with 50mm f/1.7 lens and a Sears TLS (Ricoh Singlex) with 55mm f/1.4 lens. Both have bad Copal metal shutters and the Sears lens supposedly has "slight" fungus. The Yashica lens is supposed to be in nice condition. I figured I couldn't go wrong for leass than $20... shipping included.
John, I'll be trying the ol' denatured alcohol on them although I'm hoping the Yashica firing at a single speed may be a weak or even bad battery. One speed is exactly the indication it would give if the battery is the problem. The Sears/Ricoh camera may require flushing the slow speed escapement gears or even something more but I can always use it for parts if I can't repair it. I do need a self-timer lever for one I already own that otherwise works well.
I should know something by the end of next week.

Good luck Walker. Hope at least one if not both work ok for you. At this time of year it's sure nice to have something to tinker with to stave off the winter blahs.

The Copal shutter is quite rugged. Short of a hundred thousand cycles or having a finger stuck through it, I don't think much will stop them.

Bill Bill, that's pretty much my opinion of the Copal shutter as well and I think I've read that they were tested to many times 100,000 cycles before production began. Even if both bodies are DOA and can't be revived, the lenses will easily be worth what I'm paying. And I still get the needed self-timer lever and screw that I need. Walker
