That beautiful 135mm Sonnar Peter sent me is just sitting at the moment while I wait for a PentaxM42-EOS adapter to arrive so I can try it out on my Canon 300D.
It would be highly appropriate to have a decent M42 body to go with it, don't you think? So -- what a question to ask collectors -- if you have a user M42-mount body you might want to sell (I can't afford to put too much into this one), I'd be interested. I'm not a repair guy so I'd need one with good seals and everything working mechanically. A working meter would be nice, but not essential.
Send me a PM if you need to cull anything from your collection, LOL!!

Hi Gene, No problem with letting you have a suitable camera, but the postage would make it cheaper to get one off eBay. So here are a couple of suggestions. The Sonnar was originally made to go with a Praktica, so that would be my first suggestion. I can't remember if the lens was an 'electric' one (three electrical contacts where it screws into the camera to transmit the aperture value). If so, then if you get one of the electric models it will give you open aperture metering. In which case, as you don't want to lay out too much, my recommendation would be for a PLC2 or 3. Lovely cameras - the only 'oddball' thing about them is the battery, which is expensive for a modern equivalent. Easily fixed though - you can get around it by putting 3 SR44's in a tube with a spring to space them. If you can find a VLC going cheaply, grab it, but don't tell me 'cause I want one! Non-electric M42 Prakticas - try and find an MTL5B (last but one Praktica mechanical body) - uses a single SR44. I know Prakticas are nowhere near as popular over there as they are in Europe so, second choice for a low investment - one of the M42 Fujicas. ST605, 705 or 801 in order of price. Don't think there are any battery problems with any. I've been impressed with the 605 & 705, and Bob is always singing the 801's praises. Finally I would probably get drummed out of here if I didn't mention the Pentax Spotmatics. I like the bright viewfinder on the one I have, but getting a battery was a problem over here. Suggest you take advice from Randy as to where you can get them or if there are adaptations. Regards - John ps - Here's the original lowdown on the lens www.praktica-users.com/lens/mlenses/czjson3.5_135.htmlIt isn't 'electric', so you want the MTL5B (or MTL50 if you fancy match-LEDs instead of a needle)

Gene, do a search on Evilbay for, Vintage Pentax, Fujica ST-605, Agus/Cosina, Vivitar SL-220 or SL-250, GAF L-14 L-17 L-CM L-CS, or Chinon SLR. These are all cameras that can be had for under twenty dollars American and are all M42 lens mount. The GAFs are great cameras, and the Fujicas are small, light, and have bright viewfinders.

An update: Wayne to the rescue. A Mamiya 1000 DTL with standard lens is winging its way to Ontario as I write this. This, to me, is triple goodness: 1) I get to try out Peter's donated lens on a film camera, 2) I get a camera from one of my esteemed colleagues, and 3) I now have good reasons to visit Ron's excellent Mamiya site. Life is good!

I purchased a 1000 DTL a few months ago and have been very happy with it. Its basic, rugged, and easy to use. Ron's Mamiya site rocks too.
