I bit the bullet today and came home with a Nikon D200 body. The price has been falling (a new model may be in the works) and I had some extra cash from a couple of writing gigs, so I did the deed.
The battery is charging and I'm reading the manual. I wanted this model especially for its excellent support for my AI(s) manual-focus Nikkors. Once I get past the intimidation factor, I think I'll really enjoy it.
(Rick, you saw this one coming ... )

You going to get rid of the Pentax? The D200 is awesome. My photography friend uses one. Congrats and can't wait to see some photos. It was a wise decision

Thanks Rick. I sold the Pentax a while back, before the Alaska trip, and was 'between DSLRs'. Here's the requisite camera and coffee shot from this evening: It's a very feature rich machine and it'll take awhile to get a good workflow going with it. Gene

Yep, the 5D took some time but since the controls are basically like my A2 the learning was not so long

Congrats Gene. One observation. Most D200 users say it doesn't hit stride unless you are shooting RAW and then you need software to process it. I bit the bullet and bought Nikon Capture NX and now would be lost without it. Nikon should have provided it free with the camera. I got it fot $112 through Amazon. I heard a rumor that U.K. Nikon D200 buyers are getting NX free with the camera.
Enjoy

Get the free rawshooter download. It was so good Adobe bought them out to prevent them from selling it. I just tried to find the download page and it seems Adobe is blocking it. Glad i got mine before hand

Just had a phone conversation.
Stunned I am!
No, I'm not in the wrong thread!
I'll start at the beginning.
Three years ago, I thought I would make my website earn a few pennies by turning it into a used camera saleroom listing type. So I started thinking about good domain names - the problem, as you know, is that most of the good ones have gone.
However, I am quite imaginative with words and came up with three similar sounding ones which I registered with Nominet for £29.97 (at £9.99 each - around $55 for the three - a .co.uk is about 1/3 the price of a .com)
Today, I decided, as they were coming up for renewal, I'd try and sell them. (I no longer think running a used camera web site is a good idea, as I have decided on an old camera web site due, no doubt, to the influence of certain folks!)
So I emailed a likely camera shop customer. "Like to buy three domain names - just make me an offer "
As he is mainly a dealer in used cameras, I thought I'd exchange them for an old SLR - XD7/XD11 perhaps.
We'll you guess what he offered?
Yup - a brand new Nikon D200. Could I have said "Sorry but Randy thinks an XD11 is better?
You're right I couldn't!
Why? Well I have all these lovely Nikon MF prime lenses. The D200 can meter on all the manual lenses - a thing I couldn't do on the lesser models like the D80/D40
I bet any money you like, I am the only person in the whole wide world who has got a new Nikon D200 for $55.
Proving that you can really make money out of the right words!
Biggest question now - how do I tell the wife that I passed over money for yet another camera!
The great thing is that I can use it for my daughter's wedding next week if it arrives in time.
Some days everything does go right! ;D

LOL!! ;D Congratulations, Paul! As a company, we've used that technique once or twice to good advantage...buying up domain names (.com-.org-etc) that our competitors are likely to want to use (for a pittance)...and then selling them to those same competitors for very large sums (really ticks them off, and sooner-or-later someone will fire back at us with the same thing). Don't know why it never occurred to me to try it on a personal level! Try not to giggle every time you use that D200!

Just to clarify one point Ron, these were generic names that would be useful.
One of the three was CameraTrader.co.uk
In no sense was I covering anybody's name - certainly not his. Not got any principles against it, just that I like inventing names that might be effective. Nearly got one good one the other day, but between the time I put it in checked and getting round to register it a week later, I lost it!
camerae.com Why? Well Fox Talbot used this in his description of his camera collection. Would have been an ideal name for my new multi-lingual collectors site.

Paul,
Congrats. Nice spot of wheeler-dealer-ing.
Ron,
It has now!
Both of you are people after my own heart. Keep at it, fellers.

I've always had an entrepreneurial streak...just didn't have the requisite b*lls to go with some of the decisions that might have to be made!

Paul
How true this story is I'm not certain, but it's certainly a common tale in the 'blue' half of Manchester. Ever wonder why Manchester United sold Jaap Stam - one of the best centre halves in the world, and still going strong?
Story was that when a whisper went round that United were thinking of buying him, an enterprisising City supporter copyrighted the name Jaap Stam. That meant that although he could play in a shirt that displayed his name on the back (because copyright law allows you to use your own name under any circumstances), United weren't allowed to sell any replica shirts with that name on. And the City supporter resolutely refused to sell the copyright.
When you consider that Stam's team-mate David Beckham was reckoned to be worth about £20M in replica shirt sales alone......

Why don't you guys take Beckham back? I'm getting sick of seeing TV specials on a day in the life of his wife, Posh. L.A. is about to soil itself in adoration because they now hang out with the "beautiful people" there.

Dear Mr Wayne,
Your complaint of the 19th July has been passed to me to reply to.
I regret to inform you that the goods were accurately described and widely advertised and you bought them knowing the full facts. Nothing was concealed.
This country operates a "no returns" policy
Unfortunately, once goods are past their "sell by date", they cannot be re-issued to other customers.
This "no returns" policy is operated with the full co-operation and support of many of the adult population of this country. It is unlikely thus that their will be any change or modification of our stance in the near future
I hope you understand our viewpoint now you have sampled the goods.
Yours sincerely,
Paul Winter
