PeterW posted an answer to my thread "3 Flowers & 3 Lenses" under Lens Discussion that points out just how good manual and pre-set lenses can be. I've been meaning to address pre-set lenses on DSLR cameras for awhile now and Peter's reply prompts me to do so now. Lenses made for a particular DSLR will offer full utility when mounted on the camera. Using an adapter to mount automatic M42 or other lenses almost always calls for manipulation of the f-stops. The f-stop can be selected and after focusing the Auto-Manual switch can be moved to "Manual". the alternative is to leave the switch in "Manual" and open the lens wide for focusing and then count clicks as you close down to the proper f-stop. I find both methods tedious and inconvenient. A better alternative, IMO, is the pre-set lens. Select the appropriate f-stop and twist the collar to open the aperture fully. Focus and then a quick twist returns the lens to the taking f-stop. No looking, no guessing and the camera will select the correct shutter speed for the f-stop you've chosen. Now dust off all those long neglected pre-set lenses and discover again just how good they really are. Walker

Walker, I use a pre-set long tele all the time, and find you are exactly right. I also use my M42 lenses on other cameras, and agree that the preset is easier to use. 'Course the quality of the glass must be taken into consideration too. Roy
