I was three years old. 1958, Making the "Mill road" in the Tensas swamp. Anyone that has ever travelled the mill road, in the Tensas river NWR, travelled the road my Dad carved out. Chicago mills made it to shorten the route that the logs trucks had to drive from the south end to the mill at Tallulah. Taken in '58 by my Uncle Paul who was a photog for a St. Louis newspaper. This is the area known as " Africa flats" the worst section of the road. They had to make many borrow"bar" pits to get enough dirt to build it up. These pits are still visible today

First time I've heard the term "Borrow Pit" outside Idaho. It was brought here by emigrants from Kansas and Nebraska back in the early 1900s. I've used the term in other parts of the country and people just say "huh?" So I call it "the ditch beside the road."
Did you colorize the CAT?

I lived my childhood on the island until 1956 we got a bridge and a road. That was the first time I saw a Caterpillar. It was huge and frightening.
All bulldozers are called here caterpillars ;D.

Here's a 1958 photo and no it's not 'Village of the Damned' because it pre-dates that film by 2 years Apologies for the reflections and poor development.
