I am still wanting a Leica M body and lens after all these years. After shopping around for a long time it seems that an original M6 (not TTL) has about the best bang for the buck. I would want to get a 50 or 35 mm f2 lens to go with it. If any of you have a good recommendation for the best 2nd hand leica prices I would be in your debt.

If you're interested in a used Leica, I'd watch the classifieds on www.rangefinderforum.com -- you need to sign up to be able to view them but registration is free. The members there (several of us hang out there as well as here), especially the longer-term ones, are generally very safe to purchase from. I've had nothing but good experiences there, as here, with any purchases. Another model you might want to consider is the M2. It's classic, like the M3, but has framelines for 35mm lenses. I love mine. Gene

None are cheap. The M2 and many double stroke M3's are lower-priced. I've seen some of these for as little as $450 if they had cosmetic issues, but worked otherwise. Often twice that if they are pretty. Older Summicron 50's are reasonably priced by Leica standards, but still $200-$300 for a decent one. It's darn nice stuff though, and although I am mired in the LTM and Contax universe, I often think of selling it all and moving to Leica M mount.

I bought an M2 several years ago and have no cause for complaint. An expensive CLA by Leica was worthwhile, since when it has worked perfectly in all weathers. It feels just right in the hands and is a fine photographic companion.
