Just a comment to Herrons picture. Here is what the crankshaftbearings of a 42000 Hp engine looks like. Kvaerner Philadelphia Shipyard in 2002. Nikon EM and Kodak Gold 200. I can go on forever about mechanical wonders like this. I used to install such engines for a living before I had to go back to university for reeducation. now I am happy about it, but I miss the heartbeat of these engines at 97rpm

Ha! Hi Oivind.
Helped to change one of those on a Goteverken back in 1970 in mid South Atlantic. Thought I would never get the blue marker off!!

Nice miniature bearing caps Øivind. And I thought a couple of friends who help restore steam railway engines were handling big stuff! I'll bet you needed a torque wrench about two metres long to tighten those down ... or did you just flog 'em up with a big ring wrench and a sledge hammer?
BTW, John, those look like shell bearings. You're not telling me you used blue marker and a scraper to bed them in??

Yep,
We all had a go at it - just so we could say we'd done it. Apart from that I spent most of the time that we were stopped watching a chain block, which ranks pretty low on the excitement scale.
The high point was when our Chief Steward slipped and slid down into the crankcase sump in his brand new, carefully pressed boiler-suit. Such profanities - he stuck to serving beer after that!!

Wonder if it could be bored & stroked? Blueprint & balance it, install a Crane Cam & Hooker Headers! ;D LOL! Gotta get it to 42 500 hp and 102rpm?! ;D As a kid I used to work in a machine shop, making piston rods for small marine engines...could churn out about 100 sets (600 rods) a day. At this size, I'd say my production would fall off to about one a week!
