Doing what alot of boys used to dream about. It was a thrill for me to go to the Biggen Hill Air show a few years ago having read so much about the Battle of Britain and the big part that airfield played in it. A great way to spend the day. Bob

Up and down mine, John. I can still hear Merlins. Is that B17 the Sally B in warpaint? I've got some pics of her taken at Biggin Hill when she was polished silver. Here's a couple of them you might like to see. Canon A1, FP4 processed in ID11 full strength. Sally B on parade at Biggin Hill in the 1970s before she was given warpaint to take part in several films about WW2. This is the Sally B being bedded down for the night by her groundcrew. I set the A1 on manual and closed down three stops on the meter reading to put the aircraft in semi-silhouette and catch the low sun on the side of the fuselage. PeterW

Like those B&W shots. Those merlins sound just great if you have no bad memories associated with it. Jets just don't do it for me.

Bob Each plane has it's own distinct signature sound, easily identified by those familiar with it. Back in the 1980's I lived in East Anglia for six years. I also belonged to a pistol club at Wickham Market. The club house was the old scramble shack - a Nissan Hut - from RAF Martlesham Heath, a major fighter base during the Battle of Britain. The hut had been relocated to the gun club. One Sunday afternoon I was sitting in the hut talking to a friend who was also a veteran of the British Army of WW2 and had been stationed for a time at RAF Martlesham Heath. Suddenly we could hear the unmistakable sounds of an airplane and my friend immediately said "That's a Spitfire!" We rushed out just in time to see the Spitfire pass over quite low. I suppose that it was going to or from an air show somewhere as the "Battle of Britain Flight" took part in many shows each year. I have many slides of them when they appeared at RAF Bentwaters. For anyone visiting England, a trip to the Air Museum at RAF Duxford is well worth the time. Walker
