My son and his partner were in Ontario, Canada before Christmas (my daughter is there now - where am I going wrong? !!). During a conversation, somebody mentioned that there were never any displays of Christmas lights in England. Here's one of the displays that we never have! Two streets up from us - they have an annual competition. Unfortunately the sodium lights make it difficult to do justice to the display. Anyone else have any of these mad displays locally? Regards - John

Wow...those folks really spent a lot of time and effort on their displays. At least in my neck-o-the-woods, I have not really seen or heard of any holiday displays put up for competition, but a lot of folks do decorate.

Wow, I'd hate to have their power bill! Pretty though and well worth it.

There are quite a few displays around here. John, thank you for posting that picture, what camera, film, and settings did you use?

Randy,
I've been lazy over the holiday - everything I've taken has been with my EOS 1000FN (Rebel II/SII). It's been a nice experience (the EOS is my 'keep at home' camera so I don't use it as much as my Prakticas or Konica). The on-board flash is handy, as is the auto focus (the main reason I bought it). However, the lenses - I have the Sigma long and short zooms - aren't as good as the Praktica M42s. So I have been using a CZJ Tessar with adapter as well. I am not a purist, and have no objection to letting the camera do the calculations for me (either on the EOS or the Prakticas).
So this was the EOS with Carl Zeiss Jena Tessar 2.8/50 on Fuji Superia 200 at F5.6 with the camera set to Av. On a tripod, it gave about a 4 second exposure. Trouble is the sodium street lighting which tends to overpower the decorations somewhat. Interestingly, my son has an Optio digital, which he was trying on the tripod. The street lights totally overpowered his pictures. One for film!
