Last Saturday I took a walk along the shore of Lake Ontario and found some interesting ice formations: Driftwood Swan: Both taken with Nikon F3, Nikkor 200/4, and Maco UP64c film. Gene

Wow!
My sister had a photo - pretty sure it was Lake Ontario - where the lake had frozen solid during a storm, and people were standing in the middle of eight foot frozen waves. From that I had assumed that the lakes froze every year... Not the case ?

John, we've had an exceptionally mild winter with only a modicum of ice and snow. But even during a normal winter, Lake Ontario, which is a very deep lake, never freezes over. At best, the ice may go out a few tens of yards from the shore. Lake Erie, a shallow lake, can freeze over most of its surface during a really cold winter. Our local river that forms the harbour normally freezes over for at least part of the winter, but there's no hockey on the river this year. Global warming, or maybe just a statistical fluke.

Very nice pics Gene. I live on the southern shore of Lake Erie, in fact two and a half blocks away. Lake Erie hasn't froze over since about 1999. Today we have winds of 30mph with gusts to 60mph. We have some whitecaps out there today!

Gene, those are really cool shots. How do you like your F3? I've been eyeing some on pee-bay for a while.

Gene, those are really cool shots. How do you like your F3? I've been eyeing some on pee-bay for a while. Steve Steve, to be honest, I *love* the F3. I'm still new to it, but all the controls seem to be situated just where my fingers want to find them, and the heft and feel of the camera is really pleasing. I picked up a replacement viewing screen -- an 'E' screen I think it was called, that has gridlines on it. Even without a pint, I tend to go tilt, so the gridlines help! Gene
