Some shots from yesterday in the garden.... What more could you ask - A stump, some fungus and a critter... And one of the critter (Mango generally disappears these as soon as they turn up).... One of a Red Admiral as we generally see them - in bright sunlight... But when the light comes from the right angle through the leaves of a tree... and from the back... Spider webs are a difficult subject - too many variables. Sometimes as in these you get things wrong - and yet... Regards - John

Great catch. What were you shooting with? I agree, webs are really tough to catch just right.

Thanks G'Man & Steve.
Bit of a selection. Most are with the Mamiya 1000DSX, but with a 50/1.8 Pentacon on board. First spider is a Canon 1000FN (Rebel something... I can't remember exactly) with a Sigma 35-80. And the last is the Exacta RTL1000 - this time with a 50/2.8 Pentacon.
Yes Steve, 5 & 6 have caught the iridescence nicely. Pity it's so late in the season and the wings are getting a bit tatty. Red Admirals are a great subject - they have a built-in focus indicator (the striping on the antennae). 'Course, that close in you are always struggling with the DOF.
Regards - John

Nice tree frog John. They're hard to find round here, more elusive than rare. One of my favourite little critters. Yes, spiderwebs do seem to be hard to catch just right. I've got a couple shots of webs with hoar frost on them from last year if I can only locate them. Look pretty neat with morning dew too. Don't know how you guys get so close to all those butterflies, mine take flight when I get within 3 or 4 ft (1 meter for our European friends).

Thanks Curt, but it isn't a tree frog - we don't have those over here. This is a young common frog. Length as you see it here is about 2cm or just under an inch.

John, the red admiral is a beauty! I don't know if we see them over here or not? They look familiar. I particularly like the first spider shot. There's a ghostlike quality to it that appeals to me. I think the frog in this habitat could inspire Lewis Carroll to do an entire story around the frog that lived in a mushroom tree. Fun shots!
