I got back some Superia 400 I shot about a month ago. They're shots I took on a walk in the park with a Nikon FM2n and (mostly) Nikkor 55/2.8 Micro. The last shot is with a Nikkor 200/4. I'm amazed at how well C-41 col film converts to B&W. Snail Seed Head. I don't know which plant created this Pine Needles & Raindrops Trees just beginning to turn colour (a month ago) Waterfront Trail (connecting two small parks) Gene

I keep wondering why I bother to shoot C41 B&W film because as you say colour C41 converts so well. What a difference one month makes if it is the same in your area as here, sigh. You know, later versions of the 200/4, non micro, are a much under rated lens. If you don't need the speed and weight of the 180/2.8 they are hard to beat. As always you need a good eye and that you have.

Bob, I'm a relatively recent Nikonian and when I bought used Nikkors I was able to draw on the knowledge and experience of several pros, such as Brian Sweeney, and Mike Novaks on the Nelsonfoto forum. They helped me select good-value lenses -- Brian actually did more than that, he sold me several I needed a longer lens for distance shooting around the harbour and Mike pointed out one for sale on Nelsonphoto. He thought the 200/4 highly underrated, inexpensive, and a nice compact lens. He was right -- I really enjoy using it and I don't usually need a fast lens in this focal length. C41 col filim converts so well that some Leica photographers I've met shoot it exclusively, even though the post a lot of B&W images. I was chatting with one just the other day. He loves it because he can drop it off at the local lab for dev and scan to CD, then use the images straight when they're colourful or convert to B&W otherwise. When he wants a really good image, he rescans on his Nikon scanner. Not a bad way to go, but I'm still addicted to silver-based B&W. Gene

You got good advice and I hope you have or will get a Nikkor ais 28mm/2.8 someday. I am a Nikonian but that site is pretty dead in the MF section but the archives ar good. It is interesting that some Leica shooters admit to using colour C41 to get B&W if wanted. Too many Leica owners turn up their noses at that. One of the big turn offs for me concerning using a Leica is that very attitude. Call me lazy but I use the DO and scan from a 1 hr. lab route myself and scan any that I like at high rez on my Min 5400.

Ron, "In the merry merry month of May..." Funny how I can't remember the name of my new neighbour, but lyrics from old songs are still there, including all the rock'n'roll songs I listened to as a kid. Now, where are my glasses... LOL Bob, thanks! You picked my two favs. Gene
