I took this shot from a lookout in the Daintree National Park early last month... Over the forest canopy you can see the mouth of the Daintree river. Beautiful inviting water, but unfortunatly full of crocodiles so it's not a good place to swim... Rollei dt4000 Peter

This is a very nice picture. Nice simple and restful composition. I could waffle on about how the little leaning tree with the cloud above it and the wedge of gradually lightening blue sky lead your eye down to the river mouth and the hazy hills in the background ... but sometimes it's better to forget analysis and just enjoy the picture.
D'you know, I'm learning more about the geography, and the people, of North America here than I ever did at school.
The other picture you posted, of the cane fire near Adelaide, reminds me of the days when farmers in the UK used to burn off the wheat stubble after harvesting, till it was banned for environmental reasons.
Don't see so many wheatfields in the south east UK these days. I suppose we import more and more wheat from the huge wheatfield praries of Canada and the US.
In place of the 'fields of golden corn' we now have fields of yellow rape flowers because of the huge demand for rapeseed oil for cooking. Very colourful, and I can't think why I haven't taken lots of pictures of them.
I suppose it's because I've never really been a landscape and scenic sort of photographer, more of a people and things sort. Comes from growing up in an urban environment. I really must get out and about and do some 'views' as they always used to be called.

That's a really sharp photo! It's so thick it seems like you could walk across it.

Thanks for all your comments! To be honest in such a beautiful place it is hard not to take a nice shot, but I do like landscape photography ("views" - I like that!) & I am trying to improve. I initially thought that I didn't have a lens wide enough & that was why I didn't like any of my shots... Now I'm starting to see that composition is just as much a part of it as with other sorts of photography. Some of my favourite landscapes (other people's) were taken with a 50mm lens... Oh Heck! I thought it had to be in North America ...where's the sackcloth and ashes? PeterW No worries mate... I'm an Aussie, but living here in the US while I'm in grad school. I was home recently & visited Nth Qld for some field work related to my studies. After that my prof. & I drove from Cairns to Adelaide (nearly 3500km) to visit my family... Cheers! Peter

Late to get to this one, Peter. It's so crisp and beautiful. It reminds me of a view I had from Mt Nebo in Arkansas, but there were no crocs there, thank goodness!!
