Today, my wife and I visited Port Chalmers, which is the deep water port for Dunedin. The first site you see, looking up the main street, is the cranes. Basalt was quarried locally, and was used in building. In Dunedin, many buildings used a combination of dark basalt, and white limestone from Oamaru, as does the Port Chalmers Presbyterian Church, above.
