These two panoramas were shot within 50 feet of the same spot--from the top of a earth dam holding back an irrigation reservoir about a mile from our house. One hundred years ago, before the reservoirs were built, this entire region was desert. We only have about 10 inches of rain annually. The first shot is looking northeast across the reservoir toward the Boise Mountains, about 40 miles away. The main peak in the photo is a little over 8,000 feet--not much of a mountain. The image was made with a Nikkor P 300mm f 4.5 lens. The second shot was taken with a 18-70mm Nikkor G zoom is looking northwest from the top of the dam, across the farmland with a band of sheep and the herder's trailer in the foreground. The herder is probably Basque--here from Spain on a work visa. Many of the herder who came in the early part of the 20th century, went home, got their families and returned. Southwest Idaho has the largest Basque community outside Spain.
