Shot from our garage with D300 and 80-200mm f2.8 Tokina MF lens. Just discovered something that wasn't intentional. They were shot at ISO 3200!!

Great job Wayne. Never seen a live quail before, beautiful birds though.

I with Curt on this one, just a great looking bird. That D300 just keeps amazing me at what it can do at high ISOs.

Great quail shots, Wayne! They're very handsome birds. Agree with all that's been said about the D300. Terrific colour and clarity.

VERY nice, Wayne! I first thought they might be Gambel Quail but a Google search shows them to look more like California Quail. Or, maybe not. I also agree that your D300 is proving to be a remarkable camera. Walker

I think these are considered California quail. There are more than 100 of them that live in our subdivision and they are smart enough to never leave. Although I've done my share of hunting I've never understood why anyone would want to shoot a quail. You could shoot a dozen a day and still starve to death! They are wonderfully entertaining birds to watch. Whenever they are feeding one of the males will hop up on a rock or fence and act as lookout, for cats and hawks, I suppose.
