This is my week to try out Kiev gear. What can I say except that it seems perfectly usable for a lens that is about $10 give or take. In other words, a cheap body cap. Shot on store brand 100 film with a hood on. Bob At F1.8 At F4 At F8

Bob, I don't see a thing wrong with that lens' performance. It's certainly sharp enough and the colors on the Merry-Go-Round horses are great. The highlights seem a bit blown in the first shot but that may well be my monitor which shows things brighter than some.
It may only have cost $10 but it's worth keeping IMO.

Walker Not a thing wrong with your monitor, the highlights are a bit blown. Bob Bob, I've found that large areas of bright white are tough to deal with no matter the camera, the lens or the film. That's especially true when there are corresponding areas of deep dark colors. I sometimes use the "burn tool" in PS-7 but it's not quite the same as burning a print under an enlarger. Where burning a print will often bring in detail from the negative, a scanned or digital image doesn't seem to record that detail. There are times when cloning helps more than burning. Another tool that I use on highlights in Corel's "Photo-Paint 12" is the Tone Curve set on "linear". I lock the line at the top right intersection and then go about 3/4 of the way up the remaining line and click there. Then I bring the line from that point toward the right side of the block. The effect can be from very good to awful, depending. Your wife and especially the puppy's eyes are very sharp. I believe that the helios is a Biotar copy so no matter how little you paid for it, the proof is in the images which I think are just fine. Walker

Like Walker said, the proof of the lens is in the images...which look just fine to me. Looks very much like $10 well spent!

I am pretty primitive when it comes to post processing and only have PS2. My scanner has curves in the menu but I never had any success using it. I guess I should practice more. Thanks for the tips.

Yea, I have gotten a lot less satisfaction after spending more money. You just got to love under dogs like FSU gear.
