It's a hot humid day today and there was a fair bit of haze out over the lake early this morning when I shot these kayakers at the mouth of the harbour. I 'cheated' just a little -- I added a small touch of 'diffusion glow' in Photoshop to enhance the 'feel' of the haze. Was there ever a filter that achieved an effect like that? Nice, Gene...
There have been a number of special effect filters out to accomplish most anything.
I have tried haze/fog filters before, but they cover the entire frame and you are not able to get the dimensional effect that your eyes actually see and is actually there. A waste of money IMO.

Thanks Ron. In many ways Photoshop works better than most specialty filters because you can apply effects locally and control the amount.
Now if I could only afford a good medium-format scanner ....

Gene,
Are you presently scanning medium.
I have an Epson 3200 flatbed with built in 35mm and medium format capability. It works pretty good. Epson and Micotek have a number of good such flatbeds that offer a reasonable and relative quality for a lot less price than a dedicated medium format scanner.

Ron, Yes, I currently scan my MF negs on an Epson 2450, one gen before yours. It's not bad and I use a 3rd-party negative holder that helps hold the film flatter. But it's not the same as, say, a Nikon 8000 As you say, these flatbeds are good for the price, but one can dream about the ultimate ... or maybe that would be a used Imacon ... Gene

I have the Canon 9950F flatbed. It's nice because you can gang scan negatives or slides -- 4800 dpi but I am under no illusion that the scans are as sharp as a dedicated film scanner. Went with it because I needed something that can scan up to 4 x 5. Eventually I would like to get something Nike the Nikon Coolscan V.
