One of the bright memories of my childhood was when grandpa showed up in a red ex-WW-II "War Surplus" Jeep and gave my brother, sister and I a ride. It was the first time any of us had ever been in an open car. From the license plate I would say these were taken in 1946. I'm in the back seat with my sister while my older brother got to ride "Shotgun." The original pictures were taken with a Kodak "Brownie." My brother found these prints when he was going through my mother's things. I took a hand-held picture of the original prints with my Nikon 5700 digital camera and they came out pretty good.

Definately a surplus Jeep--no tailgate. The government sold 'em for almost nothing.

Dan, these are wonderful photos. I'll bet they bring back a flood of memories. Shooting them with your Nikon 5700 has worked out really well indeed!

Gene,
Thanks, I was amazed at how well taking a picture of the photos worked.
Normally I'd throw them on the flat-bed scanner but we were away from home and had to make do.
I just made sure my Nikon digital was "Squared" to the photo and took a snapshot. I'll bet a tripod would really do wonders.

This really brings back memories. Back in the late 60's everyone around here had a surplus Jeep for hunting. My BIL had one painted red and it was the vehicle I learned to drive in.

That look like fun! I remember when I was a kid you used to see them advertised in the paper for only about $125 or so. I haven't seen one for sale in a long time.

Just an old worn out Jeep, with a flathead motor and tears in the seat. But I was Mario Andretti when Daddy let me drive! Nice photos, Grandpa was pretty cool.

When I was 8 years old, my uncle(who lived on a farm) taught me to drive using a jeep, but a regular commercial one. I was so short they had to make quick on/off adaptations to the seat and put the windshield down. I also learned to drive the tractor. Was staying there for the summer and I had to be productive in some way as part of the 'crew'.
Later my dad gave me more serious lessons in the family car, and would always let me drive it around Boy Scout camp years before the legal age to drive. He was also our Scout Master at the time so always went camping with us...thus the availability of the car for practice.
