Temperatures have dipped into the 30 degree F range here in Ohio and we have been getting wind gusts up to 46 MPH today. We are supposed to get an Alberta Clipper tonight.

I was thinking about you, Bob, when I heard about the nor'easter headed your way. We only got a little snow...but all the cold. It was 20° this morning.

50 degreees outside when I got up at 6 a.m. today. But 100 miles north they received several feet of snow over the past few days.
Looks like there's almost enough snow there to cover up Al Gore!
Sorry, couldn't resist.

Wayne: When I came to Caldwell to go to work, I hit town on Thanksgiving day. I took a lot of flack about being the "Calif boy" who had no idea about driving in the snow. They forget that Calif is not all sun and sand. I lived in the Sierra above Chico and well above the snow line. We didn't even think it had snowed until there was at least 2 feet of snow on the ground. They sang a different tune after I was the only one able to get in to work without ever sliding off the road, and I was driving a vintage muscle car with way too much horsepower for its light rear end! God, I miss Idaho! Roy

Roy:
We're about due for one of those winters where the temp drops to -25 F and stays there for a week. Last time was 1990. The last time before that was 1972. When you breath in and you feel the hair in your nose going stiff as the cold air hits it, you know it is really cold!

Wayne, That's more than really cold, that's bloody cold. Minus 25F is roughly equivalent to minus 31.6C. The only time I've experienced temperatures that low was many years ago when I was covering cold-start and running trials by Leyland Trucks. They took us to Timmins in Northern Canada. They wanted us to witness cold starting and running in the lowest temperatures which was around 2 am. The lowest recorded was minus 42C. I was a lot younger then, and I don't fancy that sort of temperature again! I have to add that the trucks, running on special 'cold' diesel and 'cold' engine oil, started and ran very well. Driving them in deep snow and on ice-packed roads was quite fun, but this was during the day when the temperature rose to around minus 25C. Still too cold for this lad's old bones nowadays. So far, touch wood, the lowest temp we've had here this year was only minus 3C. That I don't mind, but if it gets much colder in Jan and Feb I'll be staying indoors in the warm - well, unless we get deep snow; then I might be tempted out to take some snow pics. But I still think the best place for snow is on Christmas Cards PeterW

Up in Canada and Alaska in the winter they don't shut down diesels too often. They just leave them running. They often use kerosene for fuel rather than diesel because it's thinner and won't "jell" when it gets cold.
Back in 1990 when it hit 25 below I had a VW Rabbit diesel and had to drive about 20 miles to work. One Morning I was going up a hill and the car went slower and slower and finally quit. I had to catch a ride back to town, get 5 gallons of kerosene and add it to the Rabbit's tank before it would start. Even then the engine ran so cool the heater blew nothing but cold air.

When you breath in and you feel the hair in your nose going stiff as the cold air hits it, you know it is really cold! That was always my definition of cold! After a few Vermont winters I decided ten farenheit was cold. From there to about ten below didn't seem any different. On the ski slope is where I lost my tolerance. I decided if it wasn't above 25 I didn't want to ride the lift. 5:25 am this morning was a different story. It was about 67 degrees in the Piper Aircraft parking lot. I was chuckling under my breath as most of my fellow employees were wearing their jackets and hoodies. A few more Florida summers and I'll probably be joining them! Bill

We're still mild here in the south of Sweden. Apart from the odd night at -2C, night temperatures are still mostly around +5C (0C=+32F). Very wet and very windy. We didn't bring in the tender potted plants before the beginning of November (to a heated greenhouse with minimum +10C, at worst +5C if it gets really cold). We still have flowering fuschias, pelargoniums and tibouchinas round the back (unheated but a trifle warmer than outside). Once it turns cold we'll move them over to the heated place for winter storage, but it's already December and that hasn't happened yet! I'll have to mow the lawn again if it goes on much longer like this.
