Randy, The first STL 1000 in your pictures, the one with the big ASA knob on the front, reminds me so much of a Chinon I had years ago. It was sold in the UK by Dixons as the Prinzflex Super TL 1000 but also had the name Chinon on it. The only difference I remember is that the top and bottom plates were satin chromium. OK, go on. Now tell me the whole lot were made by Cosina! . PeterW

I might have guessed it! I think I'll stick with German cameras, it's easier to sort out who made what than with Japanese.

That first Argus appears to have been inspired - heavily - by the Ricoh TLS series. The similarities are very interesting.

Before the STL 1000 cameras there was the Argus SLR made by Mamiya. www.vermontel.net/~wsalati/CasualCollector/argus%20slr5.htm I saw one on e-buy a few years ago, auctioned by the original owner with case, meter, 35/2.8, 58/1.7 and 135/2.8. The whole Argus branded kit. I was outbid on it! I do have all three of the lenses, but in Mamiya Prismat/Tower/Exakta mount. I've had the Petri camera labeled as a J.C. Penney SLR 3, and am casually hunting for an STL-1000 like Randy's Cosina built model. Bill

I have my Ricoh Singlex TLS sitting in front of my computer monitor and I would use the expression 'almost identical'.

Reviving an old thread. Last night I picked up an Argus/Cosina STL 1000 from the Goodwill store for $10. The self timer lever just flops around, but everything else seems to be in order. Mine has the shutter speed on top and has chrome top and bottom. It came with a 50mm 1.7 lens. A few months ago, I didn't have any screw mount cameras, now I have 3.

The Petri made Argus STL-1000 had several relatives in the greater Argus family. Spiratone when owned by Argus wned conglomerate had the Spiratone TTL and there was also a more rarely seen Argus TTL.
The Cosina made STL-1000 was preceded by the almost identical Argus STL which was shown in ad photos as the STL-1000 was introduced. No one seems to know why they switched from the STL name to the STL-1000
