Question for my fellow camera collectors/users. I am on the hunt for a camera that I plan to use for mostly slide photography. My short list is two camera bodies with really good metering systems. The Olympus OM-3 and the Nikon FM2n. The Oly is going to cost a mint but I already have an Om kit of Zuiko lenses from my OM-1. The Nikon FM2n while cheaper, I will have to buy some lenses as all my Nikkor glass is pre AI. So gang, what would you gun for? I really would like to hear from those who own either camera. This is for now academic as I am currently looking for work, once I land, the gear hunt begins.

what is the cost difference between the Oly body and the Nikon kit with lenses? If the difference is negligible, then go for whichever you want the most.
If you don't have the room to spare to keep all the required lenses for the Nikon kit and the Zuiko glass you already have is good quality, then go for the OM-3.
Also, have you held either camera? If so, which one feels better in the hand?

Bill, I'd hate to be the one to tempt you ... but ... I have a really nice black FM2n body I've been thinking of selling, and I have a few too many AI and AIS Nikkors. Maybe we need to catch a pint at the Harp and philosophize about things photographical ... Gene

The OM-3 is in the high $600 US range if I am going for the regular not the TI, that is if I can find one. Now that Gene has surfaced and tempted me with a black FM2, I am looking at a high quality body and Nikkor AI glass is super common. It looks like I am off to Port Credit at some point, which is a 15 minute drive. It will all depend on finances for now.

Well to update, I got neither. I wound up with a user but mechanicly sound OM-4. I can live with some brassing and its preferable so I don't attract attention, I can find something minty down the road. Now I have to test drive this baby, I am impressed with the metering system. Anyone own one of these?

I always liked the viewfinder in the OM's better than the FM series Nikons. The OM-4 had a reputation as a battery eater so I would make sure to pack extra batteries.

Thanks for the heads up on the batteries, I am going to grab a second pair for the camera bag. I was told by the seller to keep on the manual 1/60 or B to conserve the batteries.

To add a footnote, Bill got a fine OM-4 and I decided to keep my pretty little FM2n so it worked out for both of us!

Probably not relevant but I had an OM-1 at one time--I'm sure it isn't as good as the later OM models. But I think my Nikon FM, which is from the same time period as the OM1 is a hands down better camera. And I think the Nikkors are superior to the Zuikos -- but that is only based on a couple of Zuiko lenses. Nikon ai lenses are going for next to nothing now, all the buyers want AF Nikkors that will work on their digital Nikons.

I shot with a pair of OM-1's for 30+ years and most of the Zuikos I used were excellent optics. Lovely camera bodies too. But I wanted to experience Nikon gear before checking out of the game so I sold and traded all my Oly gear for Nikon gear. At this point I can't say Nikkors are any better than the Zuikos I used, but I'm finding them mighty fine, as I expected. Because the ai lenses cost so little these days, I rather over-acquired ... but what nice choices!

I also have an OM-1 and I am happy with that too. I like the Zuiko optics especially for colour work. Now comparing Nikkor, Zuiko or Takuamar glass is a mugs game, I put them on the same plane. Since I own all three lens systems, I can comment on that. I do have to fill in some holes in my Nikkor lens line up especially an 85 f2 short tele, and a 80-200 f4.5 telephoto zomm. and a 28mm wideangle. I am done for bodies at the moment.

Yep. I got a 24mm f2.8 ai Nikkor a few weeks ago--like new, for $80 with shipping.
