Every now and then I play with the idea of picking up a Canon. The F-1 (my favorite) is a little pricey so I started looking at the A-1 because they seem to be more reasonable. The reference to the "Squeal" comes up often and I was wondering what it means. Is it just a noise that some of them make or a sign of trouble.
I would also like to know if the AE-1 "Program" is easier on battery consumption than the original AE-1.
Everyone I knew who had the AE-1 told me they used up batteries pretty fast.
Oh, that brings up another question, will a lens for an AE-1 work on an A-1?.

Ok, Dan hear goes. The infamous Canon"squeal" is the gears for the mirror return and the lack of lube. It is a product of the A series of cameras and does not effect the F series. There are many do it yourself attemps to fix it, and I have one that does work but requires taking off the top cover. Any of them that say you can do it without removing the top i seriously question. I have never experienced a rapid power consumption in any of the a series cameras, and I use an A1 a lot. Any Fd or FL mount lens will fit any of the manual focus cams including the T series. Of the lot of th A series the A1 was by far the best of the lot and only second behind the F series . The best way to fix the squel is a cla

Battery consumption with the Ae-1 is worst in the winter months when the tempretures drop below freezing.
