Hello all, Well, as of yesterday I have joined the Nikon crowd. I bought a Nikon FG black body w/ a MD-E motor drive, 1:3.5/4.5 28-85mm with macro Sigma lens, Minolta electro-flash P speedlight, and a Nikon SB-18 Speedlight. Also had the manual (a rarity for me to get one). I bought it at Goodwill for $95.00. I hope that was a good price, and that I got a camera that wasn't the bane of the Nikon line in the 80's. Also as this is my first Nikon I wanted to ask if it is normal for the shutter to sound the same at all speeds.

I use Nikon FG's at the school where I teach photography. The FG's are good for the students and quite reliable. The only problem we have had with them is that at first the students don't realize they have to both focus and use the meter to set the correct exposure. The Nikon f1.8 50mm E lens would be a good addition to your kit as it is substantially faster than what you currently have. It is not expensive either. Do be careful of the rewind knob on the FG as it not a sturdy as some of the other Nikons. Good Luck with it Phil

Also as this is my first Nikon I wanted to ask if it is normal for the shutter to sound the same at all speeds. Hello, Did you try to release the shutter with or without the motor? I think, that you should try to test it without the motor and a proper battery inserted. The shutter should then sound different at a different speeds. At a slower speeds you should hear two "clacks" , first curtain opening and then curtain closing and the time between the curtain open - curtain close should differ. I hope, that I explained this understandably ;D

False alarm on the shutter speed sounds. I guess different cameras will have a different sound when the shutter fires. I've been using alot of different cameras lately, 3 Canons (AV-1, T50, and a T70), 3 Yashicas (FX-7, FR II, and a FX-3 super), and 2 Pentax ME supers. So that probably explains it. I had the roll I was using for testing the lightseal replacement developed, and all shots were fantastic. I'll be on the lookout for a f/1.8 50mm E lens in the near future, and I'll be careful with the rewind knob. Thank you for the welcome to the Order. ;D Edward

OK, malkav And of course I forgot to mention, that yo can also SEE changes in the shutter speed by opening the camera back. Different SLR cameras even with the same shutter has more or less different shutter sounds due to the different mirror assembly and other possible structural differences. Happy shooting, Reiska My web site: lauro.fi/

Edward If you have trouble finding a 50mm E lens let me know. I have one attached to a slightly under used Nikon EM that I can let you have for the cost of shipping (including the camera). Regards, Phil

Now we are going to have to teach you the secret handshake and everything! Everyone needs at least one Nikon F. I have several and every time I pick one up I learn something else. I think they are among the most elegant and important cameras ever made. As an extra added bonus they are built like a hockey puck!
