Ordered an SB-600 flash for my D300 today. I had been using an old Nikon SB25 and it did a good job but worked off a sensor on the flash, not TTL. The SB600 supposedly allows you to full flash on sunny days at high ISOs.
Could have got a Sigma unit a little cheaper but it got mixed reviews and couldn't utilize all the camera features the SB600 can use.
Top of the line is the SB-800 flash but the additional features are ones I would probably never use anyway and the flash is at least $100 more than the SB 600.
I remember the first "strobe" I ever used. My dad had a Heiland Strobonar V that ran off a 510-volt battery. The trigger was high voltage, too and could give you a real jolt.

As you know, Wayne, "the" Nikon flashes of today are the SB400, 600 and 800. IMO, you did well in choosing the middle of the line.
So often one purchases the bottom (or "good") and finds they could use just a little more features, but the top (or "best") has more than you would ever think about using and at a much higher cost.
Thus choosing the middle (or "better") model is the more appropriate choice.
