Listed a camera and a couple of lenses on Ebay this week. I used to sell a lot but haven't done anything for a couple of years. I have about 220 feedbacks and ONE negative (from a minister who tried to rip me off)
Anyway, I got things listed before I saw the message from Ebay saying because of my "limited" record, any money from my items sold will be held for 21 days in case anyone complains. That's pure B.S. They are holding it and the money from thousands of other transactions, so they can commect interest on it--a million here and a million there and even at 2 or 3 percent pretty soom you're talking real money.
Anyway, I have informed the folks at Ebay that when these transactions are completed, I won't be selling anything else through that auction.

A minister? No way!!!! I'll bet his ministerial credentials came from that place in California where you just pay some money and they will send you any type of credentials, diploma, degree, etc. you want! I have read from others that Ebay is pulling a lot of schtick nowadays, especially for sellers. Have never sold on Ebay, but have but lots...but nothing in probably 7 months now.

I too am seeing my last of eBay. It has changed.
I used to be able to exclude vendors who would not ship to Canada. No more. What a waste of time. I used to be able to limit what I viewed to the final 4 hours. Now I get items that are closing 5 days hence. What a waste of time. "Auctiva" is now an active vendors' representative. It takes forever and ever to download. It should be banned. What a waste of time.
Since the wedding of eBay and PayPal, paying for an item has become a tedious waste of time.
But my biggest gripes are not with eBay. It is with the vendors. I am sure the great majority of them are sincere and honest and conscientious. But lately I seem to have encountered more than my share of less than frank vendors that will say - or not say almost anything to make a sale. I can't be bothered with "feedback" as it only engenders retribution.
So, I shall check in with eBay periodically but it is no longer my primary source of cameras. It is time for me to cut back anyway.
Garage (boot) sales and flea markets will now become my haunts.

No, the guy was actually a minister and three years later contacted me and want to let bygones be bygones so he could get rid of the negative feed back I gave him. I didn't even reply. Ebay now seems to be all about the big sellers. At one point I was buying Russian cameras from Russians and selling them to Japanese, who had trouble dealing direct with the Russians. I was making some nice money but it just turned into too much work. Over the past couple of years I have bout and sold some gear but usually through direct internet contacts I have developed.

Gene Gene, I realize that I shall probably deprive myself of a great deal of superb equipment. Such as is described by: the now favourite complete and detailed description from the UK - "Optically perfect". or "WOW!" or "Excellent except ...................................................................................." or "From my grandfather's estate." or the infuriating "Vintage". or "Antique Kodak Flashfun Camera." or "Very rare Argus C3." or "............ for its age." or "LOOK." or "lense". or "will make a great display piece.". or "Some rust. Leather is missing in some areas. Viewfinder lens is cracked. Shutter is stuck. Rewind knob is missing. Otherwise Excellent." and, of course, as you said "MINTY". I would prefer "CHOCOLATEY". Oh yes. I shall sacrifice a great deal by my decision. Mickey

Hi Mickey,
I think everybody has come across the selling descriptions you mention. There's also the well known 'I know nothing about cameras' and 'Not sure if it works as I haven't tried it'. Yeah, yeah, pull the other leg, it's got bells on it.
But I haven't got a lot of argument with ebay itself, nor with PayPal. I don't buy much on ebay, but I've been happy enough with the few cameras I have bought. I've also found paying by PayPal very simple and easy - one click to say buy, and another to confirm.
When I thinned down my accumulation I sold quite a few cameras on ebay and again I had no problems. I described them as honestly as I could. Some fetched less than I thought they would, but others fetched more. So far I've got 100% feedback.
Yes, the ebay listing fees and the PayPal commission are a bit of a bind, but they're cheaper than taking a stall at a car boot sale.
All in all, though, I agree that it's much better to buy at a camera fair, flea market or car boot sale where you can handle the camera before you buy it. Then, if you buy a dud, you've got only yourself to blame.

I've sold a lot on Evilbay, after over 900 transactions I still have 100% feedback, yet I'm made to feel like I don't count. After I pay Paypal fees for accepting credit cards, I have to pay Ebay fees. Ebay and Paypal are one and the same, so every time I sell something I get double dipped.
