We've had a heck of winter so far. For the last month it seems like there has been torrential rain somewhere in the archipelago. This is the Ashly, about half an hour's stroll from my back door. It comes up fast in a sou-west storm. The longer rivers will come up even further when the snow-melt hits the mountains in spring. The pylons have deep foundations, they need to as they are the backbone of the national grid, carrying power from southern hydroelectric dams to the North Island. These were taken two weeks back. My wife and I went back up to the river today and it is back to normal. I took the Lordox this time, so will have to wait to finish the film before posting comparison shots. Our rivers are short and steep, so flood really quickly. In the 19th century drowning was called "the New Zealand death" and coroners even considered categorizing it as a natural cause! As a reminder of those bad old days, a couple up in the Nth Island were drowned in these latest storms; they were trying to walk across the normally shallow or dry creek to get to their house. In floods, familiarity can be fatal.

I think I just saw the same scene in a movie called The Castle starring Michael Caton. He called it something like Barniedoon. SP?

That'd be Bonnie Doon. And tell him he's dreamin'! Flamin' little ripper that flick.
Can't believe it was 11 years ago now. Made the same year I moved across the ditch to Oz. Michael Caton is a true blue Aussie original - perfectly cast in the role of Daryl the "little Aussie battler" if ever there was one. The Castle was made on a tiny budget: the name Kerrigan was chosen for the family since it was already painted on the sides of the tow trucks hired as props for the family business. I wonder if Kerrigan's Towing got more business after the film became a hit?
I think that The Castle crossed my mind when I took the photo. Jet boating is popular on the Ashly (the modern jet boat was invented about a hundred miles south of here) and I'm sure Daryl would be out in one if he lived 'round here. Ah...the Serenity!
