Shot with my recently-acquired 18-200mm Nikkor. I think it focused a little more on the wall than on the swallow. They are amazing birds. He doesn't show any sign here of preparing to fly but the instant he heard the camera he took off and was totally gone from the viewfinder by the time the shutter finished its cycle.

Wayne,
Very nice shot. Swallows are, indeed, amazing birds. They are especially beautiful and amazing when in flight.

This little fellow will be headed for Argentina (or that general neighborhood) in less than a month. They return in mid April.

I really enjoy watching the swallows zoom and dive over the parks and river, especially knowing they love vacuuming up vast quantities of insects, including mosquitoes. Our barn swallows will leave in about two months time, giving these chicks, which just hatched out a week or two back, time to get strong enough for the flight. Taken with my new Nikon 55-200 VR lens. Cropped at least 80% -- there was a broad path of river between me and the nest so I couldn't get any closer. Gene

Beautiful shot, Gene. Interesting your swallows leave so much later than thos here in a warmer clime. Ours usually are gone by the third week in September.
