I had a trip out with some friends to Little Walsingham in Norfolk, UK for lunch and some sight seeing. It was, like most days this week, very overcast but here is a picture of me among the ruins ... and an old Rover car in the car park caught my eye. The pictures were taken with my Fuji F30.

Ah, a rose among the ruins!. Very nice shots Rachel. When we were there last year we were in Sandringham, which looks to be about 15 miles from Little Walsingham. I can never get over how green it is in the U.K. Of course there is a reason it's so green.

Yes all that rain We haven't had so much rain this year but not much sun either Little Walsingham is famous for it's shrines both RC and protestant and pilgrimages to both. Here are a couple more pictures.

Rachel,
Lovely pictures. All four of them. I have been to the UK twice and have nothing but raves for that emerald isle.

Rachel, those are all very nice pictures. I've always preferred overcast days as the light is even and eliminates strong shadows. In fact, shadow areas are often opened to show far more detail than a sunny day that casts strong shadows that hide detail. Skin tones are enhanced as well. Your pictures illustrate that perfectly IMO.

Lovely photos, Rachel. The ruins look quite old. Medieval? Before Henry VIII?
I have to agree with Walker. These photos demonstrate the advantages of shooting on overcast days.

Green Green Grass of Home sung by Tom Jones and , Oliver Wakeman, Greenleaves was once among my many favourites. Today the TV and the green scenery of Emmerdale and an easy chair.
That Rover reminds me times when the British cars were popular. Even such luxury like Rover and Armstrong Siddeley buzzed in the neghbourhood. My family drove with Skoda.
Overcast is fine if you avoid too much sky.
Rachel,
Thank you for the excellent pictures!

The ruins look quite old. Medieval? Before Henry VIII? Yes Gene, pre-Henry VIII. Have a look www.information-britain.co.uk/showPlace.cfm?Place_ID=1767The weatherman says that this August has been the dullest since 1912 !! We seem to be missing the rain here in Norfolk but I'm sure we'll get some later in the week

Rachel, thanks for the link. Isn't it amazing to think people have been making pilgrimages there since the 11th Century? And I suppose some of those early pilgrimages were very like the one depicted by Chaucer.

I've always been a cloudy day sort of guy. I like shadowless lighting and softer contrast. I would be very comfortable (photographically) living in the U.K.

Just shooting for play, I like the challenge of high contrast...dark shadows and bright sunshine.
But for serious shooting...for my personal use or a job...I, too, prefer the subdued lighting from a slightly overcast day.
