I did an innocent search on Google the other day looking for information about the LIncoln Highway and clicked on a link. Next thing I know I've got this crap from Anti-Virus 2009 on my computer telling me I have to pay for virus protection. Well, I thought I was down for good. I found a virus and spyware removal tool and got rid of AV2009 and 151 other nasty things in my computer. So far so good, seems to be okay now.

Anti Virus 2009 is only one of a number that pop up when you click onto certain websites. But the jerks are now even into news websites. The ARE ALL BAD and if let run will add disrupting/security busting nastys on your PC. If one pops up and starts to run...you must quicker than immediately stop it!!!!!
I had Webroot spysweeper but replaced it with Norton 360...the newest version which is supposed to tackle and beat the stuffing out of all undesirables. Have had it for a month now and...so far it is working. Cost was $70. It is named "360" as it stops popups, spyware, trojans, viruses, etc.

The worst is there's no warning you're on dangerous territory, and like Randy you can still slip even when being extremely cautious about which sites to visit. I hate reminders that an update is available, even for programs I regularly use and have set to watch out for updates! Sounds like a paradox, but you can't see the difference between the genuine reminder and a malicious mimic. I'm super-paranoic and push them off the screen and leave them there still when it's time to close down. Then I go to the program site and check the update.
I have Adaware and Spybot too, but found a cokie setting in my browser (Firefox) that practically took all their work away: in Tools/Options, click the Privacy tab, find the Cookies section, set "Keep them until" option to "I close Firefox". This makes sure cookies have a very brief life.

Randy,
Glad to hear your computer seems to be free from nasties.

I used Spybot Search & Destroy to clean my computer the other day. I just installed Avast tonight and it slows my computer down.

My Norton 360 slows things down a bit. But I have been told by computer tech at Best Buy that any of the programs worth their weight will do that to an extent. Mine has not slowed to be of any bother.
