This is the main attraction. HMS Trincomalee, an Indian-built frigate launched in 1817 - making her the oldest warship still afloat in Europe. She's been extensively renovated (the work is still going on). Around 70% of her original timbers (mainly teak) are still in place. the rest has been replaced - mainly by Iroko. Unlike "Victory" she is no longer in commission (her last was in 1867), but Victory is no longer afloat. Her stern was originally flat - they did quite a nice job! Those decks are low - around 5 foot on the main deck, and 4'6" below. I skinned my head, and I was wearing a hat ! Not enough room to swing a cat - the hammocks are 14" wide... Her main armament - long 18 pounders... And the shorter 24 pound carronades, or smashers. You can see the difference in the size of the cannonballs. The cannonballs are real, but the guns are replicas. The powder monkey got to carry the charges from the magazine. That was lined with copper, and no iron was allowed anywhere near it to prevent sparks. You can see the charges behind him... Regards - John
