Hi,
I just got a Miida 300mm f/4.5 lens from a great seller, David Murphy. This is a beauty, it looks absolutely new. And it was all of $35! I've never had a prime lens this length. My longest zoom goes to 200mm. This Miida feels like it weighs in the 2-3 pounds range. Is that normal? How much does a 300mm lens weigh usually? Forgot to mention -- it's the Minolta MD mount. I have a refurbished SRT 201 which I bought it for..

Hi Mike:
According to my "super accurate, calibrated, lab quality equipment" (aka bathroom scales ;D) my Tokina-built 300mm TX prime weighs in at 2lbs, so the weight of your Miida sounds about right. Roy
BTW I weighed it wearing its Minolta MD adapter, just to be "exact!" ;D

Thanks Roy! Guess I'm in the ballpark then... what kinds of things do you use yours for?

I mostly use mine around the airfield. It is a 5.6 so it needs a lot of light when shooting moving objects. I do some nature work with it also. If you look at my thread about the fire-fighting aircraft from last summer, it was used for most of the shots of the aircraft. The terrible air quality impacted the colors, but I left them as shot. Where does the horn attach? Is it an electronic horn or a Tiujaunna Taxi horn?

It's kind of a sick duck horn

LOL They can still be handheld if you practice. My Pentax 300/4 weighs 2.5 pounds. I prefer a tripod, but I've done birds with it handheld.

I've handheld my Tamron mirror 500 f8 but for my smattering of 300 f5.6 and 400 f6.3 I like to use a tripod.
