I've always been impressed with your work Gene but with my new monitor I can really appreciate the subtleties. Nicely done as usual.

Gene. I love my 55mm Nikkor P that I had John White convert to AI so it will meter on my DSLRS. On the D40 or D60 I think you want a non ai lens, however.
I don't have the extension ring for mine but it still can get down pretty close.

Bob, Curt, Wayne, thank you. The D40/D40x/D60 models are interesting because they're the only current Nikon DSLRs that can mount both pre-AI AND AI(S) and subsequent lenses. They don't provide built-in metering but the lens mount is universal.
On my D300 I can use all my AI(S) lenses and after. With metering. But I love the light weight of the D40 with a single old prime attached. I'm pretty good at guessing exposure and it only takes a test shot or two to verify with a histogram.
I also have the micro-Nikkor AIS 55/2.8, which is also sweet, but perhaps not as bitingly sharp at the close end. It is corrected to give good results in the mid and distant ranges though, which the 'P' isn't. The P takes terrible shots of the distance. Very soft.
I keep telling myself that one of these days I'll be replacing all my old manual-focus Nikkors with AF Nikkors, but realistically, MF doesn't slow me down much and I can still see well enough to focus. If my eyes deteriorate, then it's off to AF land...

Gene
I've looked at this several times now, and you know what? It gives me a feeling of sadness. Maybe it reminds me one of those Rorschach things! Normally I look at a photograph and think - "Hey, that's good", or "Not keen on that one", or more often "Hum". Getting feelings from two rosehips is a new departure. You're expanding my horizons!
Regards - John
ps Well done!
