Till now I have imagined Humpty Dumpty as a statue. At school we used to sing that song in English class. In French class the common song was "Alouette, gentille Alouette". That later remained the only memory in my French lessons except some useful sentences like "Voule vous couche avec moi ?"

Oh, the dangers of relying on pop-song translations! I imagine what the lyric writer intended was Dormirez-vous avec moi?  . Unless, of course, my memories of left-bank Paris slang and innuendos are getting too dim.  . PeterW |

I think there may have been two writers.
One was ---- OK --- hot.
The other was just tired.
Or perhaps Peter's lyrics were written after Reijo's and Wayne's by the same person.

Voulez-vous coucher avec moi? is
Will you lie down with me?
Maybe there is a polite 'insinuation' there? Possibly more suitable for a pop song lyric. Toujours la politesse!
I haven't used, read or listened to idiomatic urban French for about 60 years - Maigret novels, and films like 'Touchez pas au Grisbi', 'Rififi' etc.
I imagine Quebec, and maybe New Orleans, have their own idioms - if there is any French still spoken in New Orleans.
Maybe this thread ought to stop here in case we get too many 'insinuations'.

Good Morning, PeterW - or Good Afternoon.
I am not going to get embroiled in a discussion of a subject about which I have little knowledge.
My high school French and the French spoken by my fellow Canadiens in La Belle Province are the only versions to which I have been exposed. I have never been to France or N'awlins, y'all. Admittedly, I am not a very good student.
So let us take our little sewing scissors and snip this thread before too much unspools.
