Eyam is a lovely village in our Peak District. But in 1668 they received a very unwelcome visitor - Bubonic Plague. It left scars that remain to this day... The local school From a total population of around 500, some 260 people died On the roof of the local museum you can see the culprit While a few people left when the first victims died, the remainder sealed themselves in the village to prevent the spread of infection to the surrounding area. As you walk around the village you can see plaques on the cottage walls, showing the names of the people who died there, and many of the houses have graves in the gardens - another attempt to prevent the spread of infection. A pretty impressive example of selfless self-sacrifice hey? Regards - John

I would say most people don't know the real meaning of that nursery rhyme.
