The Silver Dollar Fair opened here in Chico last night. Mo and I went to the fair, ate junk food, and went to the headliner show. Air Supply was the headliner act. Always was one of my favorite groups. They still bring it! Heckuva show! We had a grand time! Pentax P3n Kalimar (?) 70-210 zoom lens--coulda been better Fuji 800 Hope y'all enjoy the pix. We sure enjoyed the show! Roy

A bit of a rarity - a UK/Aussie band that was more popular in the States than in their home countries. Glad you enjoyed it - and the avoidance of spotlight flare was masterful !

Thanks for the comments, John. They had just returned to the States from Oz. Roy

The third shot is a winner, Roy! Air Supply was a staple on my playlist when I was a radio DJ.
Musicians seldom retire, they just keep on touring! I've seen some fondly remembered acts here in FL, seldom in a venue where I can take a camera. Johnny Rivers, Jose Feliciano, Charlie Musselwhite and Arlo Guthrie among others. Mr. Guthrie has a winter place here and we've met him on several occasions. He's a photographer in addition to being performer and songwriter.

Thanks, Bill. That image was heavily cropped from a 210 mm shot from that Kalimar zoom. Don't even know for sure where I got it. Think it came mounted on one of my P3's. Roy

Air Supply? Are you guys serious?! Next I'll be reading the praises of David Gates and Bread.

I like the photos Roy, but like Johnny said (If he's serious), Air Supply!!
It's a subjective thing, of course. I always found them too soft.
I am 'on air' at present and am, in fact, playing an Oz rock band: AC/DC - Whole Lotta Rosie.
Cued up to play next are Slash's Snakepit and Skid Row. I like it harder. Just hope the listener's do.
Actually, I know they do. That's why they are listener's.

Thanks for looking, and I'm glad you enjoyed the photos. You and Johnny are completely correct. Music is nothing if not subjective. This is what keeps all the genres alive. My personal taste is eclectic, but does not run to the heavy rock such as you mentioned, Geoff. While I appreciate the talent involved, the results are not to my taste. Perhaps it has something to do with the gray in my hair! ;D Shoot, I still have my Andy Williams vinyl! Ol(fossilized!) Roy

Air Supply? Are you guys serious?! Next I'll be reading the praises of David Gates and Bread. Wow! Another great band from the 70s!! Even back in the 70s I had little say in what I played on the air. It was all taken care of by program and music directors with veto power granted the GM and owner. On occasion the owner's wife would order a song removed from airplay! When I did have some leeway was in the early 90s when the station asked me to do a 60s era oldies show on Saturday night. I managed to fit in some of the groups influences from the 50s and some of the music they inspired that was popular in the later 70 and 80s. It was fun while it lasted. My last radio gig was on a couple of pre programmed radio stations here in FL. I was allowed to turn on the mic at certain times and was given a list of station promos to read. Radio wonders why no one listens anymore...

My musical tastes are as diverse as my taste in cameras.
Friday is my hard rock evening, but I also present a programme which is heading towards the opposite end of the musical spectrum, being mostly jazz, ballads and the more laid back blues styles. Right now I'm on air and Miles Davis and crew are performing Flamenco Sketches from the album "Kind of Blue". Before that, Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae and Blossom Dearie. Very relaxing stuff.
The station is non-commercial so nobody tells me what to do. Programming choices are mine alone.
Next week, some real r 'n' b. That is, pre-motown when the music had something.

The station is non-commercial so nobody tells me what to do. Programming choices are mine alone. You're a lucky DJ! I know. It seems that, increasingly, in our world, we are told what to do, when, how, etc. It's great to be shut away in a studio making my own decisions for three hours. John I did like some of the very early Stones stuff but favoured The Animals. I just haven't got into the Stones since those days. Agreed. Chuck Berry is the man - or one of them! (It's a pity his character hasn't always been up to the standard of his musicianship) The station has a weekly rock 'n' roll programme based around the original rock 'n' rollers, presented by a guy who was once part of the scene. Two of us are weekly guests with favourites or obscurities of our own to share. Chuck Berry next week? You can bet on it.

Geoff
Sadly Chuck's lost it altogether now. I missed it, but he was on at the Maryport Blues Festival. Apparently he went on stage, played exactly the same arrangement of 'Johnny B. Goode' three times in succession, took a series of bows, went off stage and went home, leaving a bemused audience asking "What just happened?" LOL
Quite a few of the 60's groups could do R&B - The Beatles, The Kinks and the Animals all spring to mind, but the driving backbeat of the Stones early stuff WAS R&B to me. I hear stuff announced as R&B nowadays and think "No it's not!" Mind you, I think the term has now been broadened to include anything with a fast beat.
Regards - John
