Just got this one! This is the Mamiya Sketch, a nifty little rangefinder made in 1959. It was Japan's first 24x24cm format with 35mm film ... a format that never became popular in either the Japanese or export markets. I've never been able to find production records, but I don't think it was widely exported to the United States. It had first-class optics with a linked rangefinder, and was finished in grey leather. It is EXTREMELY RARE in auction today. I've been looking for one for almost 10 years now, and finally (through a kind note from a member of my own Mamiya 35mm Forum) found one in an eBay auction in the UK! It just arrived, and I had to repair a sluggish shutter and fix the clasp that locks the back (the whole back removes). But that's done, and I have a test roll of film in it right now. I'll take some more images tomorrow, including some next to the Sketch's bigger Mamiya 35mm cousins, as a size reference! www.mamiya35collectors.com/mamiya sketch.jpg[/img]

That's a slick one, Ron. Mamiya sure had some imagination.

This is a total aside, but reading the caption under Ron's portrait, it occurred to me a great potential recognized but unrealized, would be the greater burden. Yeah, ok, I'll go back to playing with my cameras.

Yeah, ok, I'll go back to playing with my cameras. LOL!! ;D That's the whole idea! Living up to a great potential is what makes it such a burden. After all, people expect great things from great potential. If you are seen to have little potential, then just about anything you accomplish can become something to rave about, and there's no burden at all to that!

Quite a haul Curt! I've found the Chinon M42 cameras fairly easy to tinker. Have fun with your CE/CMs.

The Sketch (dainty little critter!) is sitting between one of my Mamiya ZE's and a Mamiya Prismat CWP. www.mamiya35collectors.com/sketch compare.jpg[/img]

Ron, I really enjoyed your Mamiya website - a fantastic reference. Today I met a Craigslist seller to check out her Nikon FM and in the bag beside it was a M/S 1000 DTL. She wanted an extra $75 for it. Both cameras were dirty and banged up so I didn't purchase either of them, but it got me interested in the Mamiyas - a brand I know ZERO about. Couldn't even tell you where they were made before I scoured your site. On a funny note: "someone" had jammed the lens onto that Nikon FM almost upsite down. Not sure how they got it to mate up at all, and it appeared to scrape the mount pretty badly. I just chuckled to myself, worked the lens off gently and mounted it up properly for the seller, showing them how the dots are to line up. Thanks for the great history lesson on Mamiyas. The price point on these cameras right now are such that I might go ahead and start collecting them myself. Not holding out for a Sketch any time soon though... Best regards, Mark

BTW, Curt:
Holy cow, man. 18 + 12 fixer cameras this month? To put this into perspective - I have but 23 cameras in my entire collection!
I just got the Minolta Maxxum 5000 and the Nikon FM2 this month. You'd have been bored to death!

Hi Ron, That's one sweet little rangefinder you bought. Love to see one in the flesh myself. Guess if I'd been smarter years ago I'd have the Rambler all restored by now but time and cash only permit one at a time. Stopped counting the horde at 1500 cameras, but I do keep track of my SLRs still, 408 with 7 more coming and 14 parts/fixers that I don't count unless they work. Should be interesting ripping into the Chinons, I managed to get all 4 Ricoh KR5 SuperIIs working but need two new tops and 2 cocking levers before I can say they function correctly or look pretty. Of the Chinons, I believe 8 will be fixeable and 4 will end up in a parts bin. I try and keep my camera budget under control but I've found too many this summer that I just couldn't pass up. Only want one more Konica Autoreflex TC, Pentax K2, Canon EF and a Nikkormat EL then I'll be slamming on the brakes for a few months. Sooner if the mill closes or goes into bankruptcy but you can't live your life in fear. Anyhow, back to those yard sales 'cause it's Saturday.
